Many
docks and moored boats are damaged each year by wave action caused by winds
or boat traffic. There are a number of ways to combat this problem, depending
on the severity of the problem.
We design and build custom wave attenuation systems for most inland waters systems,
using vinyl piling, steel sheeting, and treated lumber as best suits a particular
job. In designing wave attenuators, you must take into account all aspects of
the wave and the environment where the attenuator will be located. This should
include calculating the force of the wave as defined by wave height, length,
and period. Basically, the longer the wavelength and period, the more energy
carried in the wave. Generally, the more energy carried in the wave, the deeper
and wider an attenuation system needs to be. Systems can be built as part of
a dock, or as free standing units.
Systems built as part of a dock are more cost effective because slips can be
attached, but these systems are harder on the dock. Free standing systems provide
the best protection, but provide no revenue generation from slip rentals for
the marina owner. Each project is analyzed and engineered to determine the type,
depth, and width of the systems required.
